Wii' Shortage

Just 39 days before Christmas, Nintendo announces there could be a shortage of its Wii consoles, meaning there could be a lot of upset children on Christmas morning.

The company predicted it would sell 14m consoles this year, this has now been revised to 17.5m, with 3.5m consoles being shipped in time for Christmas.

The demand for the console is higher than Nintendo could ever have anticipated, with unprecidented world wide sales.

Websites such as Wii-consoles.co.uk have been setup to allow people to find retailers stocking the console, but if you really want one for Christmans, then I suggest you start shopping now.

One Platform?

Games

Gerhard Florin, senior executive at Electronic Arts has said the company would prefer to see a single gaming platform across all consoles making game development easier.

Well would this work? Where would the advantages be? Well the biggest advantage would be the easier game development, imagine developing a game for PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and PC, all for release at the same time. The work needed is multiplied four times. So with one platform, game development should be much quicker. Also, for example, you could buy Call of Duty on the PS3 and the play against people on Xbox's etc. This could also possibly drop the price of new games. As I'm sure people have noticed, a new game on the PS3 costs more than the same game on Xbox.

And the disadvantages? Well, why have different systems? What would really make the Xbox different from the PS3? Maybe the different hardware power, but if your creating a game for one platform, then it would be the same no matter what the hardware was, unless they take the PC approach and have different settings for different systems. Then if that's the case, surely it would be just as easy to code for separate platforms?

Then there's the competition between MS, Sony and Nintendo. Why would they pump so much money into an area when there would not be as much of an advantage over a competitor as in the current setup? Its the competition that has advanced technology so quickly, without it we'd probably still be dreaming of today's "next generation" consoles.

So I say leave it as it is!

Wii sells 1M

The Nintendo Wii has become the UK's fastest-selling home console in history, with 1 million units sold in 38 weeks.

It was 50 weeks before PlayStation 2 hit the 1 million mark, while Xbox 360 took 60 weeks to reach the same target.

According to Chart Track, the Wii now has a 68 per cent share of the UK home console market. The Nintendo DS also continues to perform well and has an 86 per cent share of the handheld market.

"The non-stop demand for Wii even in the traditionally slow sales periods for videogames in the UK is clearly behind this record-breaking achievement," said UK boss David Yarnton.

"The performance of both systems appears to indicate that unprecedented interactive entertainment experiences, provided by a combination of the revolutionary nature of DS and Wii with the increasing number of unique software titles for the system from Nintendo and third parties, are being enjoyed by both avid and new gamers of all ages."

Yarnton said he believes DS and Wii "will continue to be the main driving forces" behind the expansion of the games market in the coming months.

Microsoft has finally admitted that there is a problem with the 360 hardware and has extended the warranty to 3 years. This applies to all consoles purchased including the release consoles. If you have had to pay for console repairs you will receive a full refund automatically.

This is good news and shows that Microsoft are listening. They have also said they will be changing parts of the hardware to try and improve the reliability. I, for one, have had 2 consoles break on me and welcome this move!

The warranty applies to every console sold anywhere in the world, so if you've paid for repairs, you'll be getting a refund soon!

The last game to be banned in Britain was Carmaggeddon, in 1997, that decision was overturned after an appeal.

Manhunt 2 creators, Rockstar, have 6 weeks to appeal the decision.
